Tax Relief Scams Don’t Get Duped
We have compiled an alphabetical list of famous tax gurus and organizations along with information about them which taxpayers like you may find of interest. The Federal Trade Commission has a similar page, although the FTC is reluctant to name the companies behind the scams, but they do identify red flags to watch for at FTC.gov.
These tax relief scams are carried out by companies that are not interested in the best way to resolve your tax problem. Rather, they are interested in what the best way is to take your credit card information.
You’ve seen the ads. You’ve heard the commercials. “Settle your tax debt for pennies on the dollar,” they claim. “We are the nation’s largest tax representation firm,” these firms call themselves. “We are publicly traded,” they proclaim, as if there haven’t been Enrons, Worldcoms, and other fraudulent public companies. Yet, these same firms have been sued by Attorney Generals for consumer fraud and theft. Others have over 1,000 complaints with the Better Business Bureau.
The outrageous claims and advertisements are no guarantee that the company will represent you well. The fastest way to determine if the firm you are choosing is a good one is to simply look them up through the Better Business Bureau. Take a look at the following links to see if your firm “makes the grade.”
These are three good sources to use when researching any company.
